“Tweener” is a college short film that tells the story of Max, a promising young squash player. After losing his coach - an almost fatherly figure to him - Max finds himself immersed in a new environment, much more hostile and competitive than he could have ever imagined. The early loss of his trainer leaves a deep void in him, a void that his new coach, Esteban, soon detects and tries to exploit to his own advantage.
Thus, Max is soon faced with a decision: try to keep his passion for squash or sacrifice it in order to become the best, whatever it takes. Will he defend his integrity or give in to external pressure and the need to please? Will he honor the memory of his former coach or seek to replace him with anyone else, so as not to face the mourning?
The story takes place over the course of a few days and revolves around a junior squash championship. Winning it represents, for all the characters, not only an opportunity to prove that they are the best, but, above all, an occasion to show Esteban who is really the best.
Main features and goals of the crowdfunding campaign
“Tweener” is a sports drama that depicts pressure, grief, the need to please... but above all, squash. Although all these themes may sound, at first glance, familiar or even superficial, we believe that the greatest virtue of this short film -in terms of its treatment of these themes- is its originality.
Because, honestly, very few people know squash as a sport, and we believe that this is more an advantage than a disadvantage for the project. It gives us the opportunity to present a sport with a completely new look, from a fresh perspective, to an audience that hardly knows it. We can invite the viewer into a entirely new world, where chess-worthy strategies are developed in a matter of seconds, inside the players' minds. Where a constant reading of the opponent at the level of boxing is necessary.
At the same time, that gives us a great responsibility, and we are fully aware of that. Although the story focuses mainly on Catalan squash, with this short film we want to pay a global tribute to squash. A love letter that, even if only on a local or individual level, can contribute something to the revival of the sport. We want to create a short film that, when you watch it, makes someone suddenly get up, and pick up a rubber ball and a squash racket.
We want to tell all this through the eyes of Max, whose whole life revolves exclusively around squash.
Why this is important
This short film is addressed, first of all, of course, to squash players and to those who are interested in this sport. To let them know that there are other people who live it with the same passion. To show the essence of a sport that was once popular, but has now become niche.
In addition, we want to take advantage of a historic opportunity: at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, squash will be, for the first time, an official discipline. So we want to get ahead of that squash renaissance and contribute, however modestly, to its dissemination and recognition before 2028.
But beyond that, the main topic is undoubtedly toxic perfectionism. We want to talk about how that need to be the best influences your perception of yourself. We want to talk about where that red line is that, once crossed, no longer allows you to say....
whatever it takes.
Team and experience
The whole team is made up of film students and other similar disciplines, whose previous experience is composed of audiovisual practices designed to learn the craft and find their authorial point of view. For this reason, and as it's a non-profit project, Tweener will be **made with the passion and motivation of a team of young people who have nothing else to gain but experience and good friendships.
