Farewell Celebration (Community Commemoration) in the Neighborhood
Tere was a woman who lived the streets, making every celebration a neighborhood affair and turning the streets into part of our home. Many people want to say goodbye in the way she would have wanted—out in the streets, with food, music, tears, and joy, bringing together both young and old. Just as she did for us, this farewell will be open to everyone, accessible, and intergenerational.

General information

Tere Has Left Us.

We will no longer find her around the neighborhood, weaving that society where we take care of each other, fighting to reclaim spaces for neighbors, accompanying the most vulnerable souls—young and old—organizing trixi rides to see the sea again, persuading whoever necessary to achieve justice, or smoking a cigarette on a bar terrace, chatting with her beloved neighbors.

But we will still see her, in every corner. In George Orwell Square, at the Borsí—which now belongs to all of us—walking past the old Tete, or on her beloved Avinyó Street, which, like Sant Miquel Square, is now free of cars.

Tere deeply loved her daughter. She taught her to be strong, free, and a fighter, and never stopped supporting and loving her so she could do whatever she desired. This infinite love extended to everyone around her daughter, making us feel part of this great family.

A great family led by a single mother in the 1970s, when being one was an act of liberation and resistance. And in the ’70s, she also began supporting the trans and queer struggle, after meeting the community in that small refuge of freedom, the Georgia Boite nightclub—later Lib—on Pelai Street.

She was the president of the Association of Residents and Merchants of Avinyó Street, she welcomed and supported the Nens de la Cola—the first migrant children to arrive in the Gòtic—in the 1990s, and she created the Gòtic Labor Network. She fought to make the neighborhood a dignified place to live, so the elderly could sit while waiting to shop, so the Borsí would belong to the neighborhood, so Sant Miquel Square would be a peaceful and enjoyable space.

She turned the streets into her home—and into a home for everyone in need. She was vice president of the Gòtic Neighborhood Council for fourteen years, defended a new healthcare center (CAP) for the people of the neighborhood, and stood up so that no one would have to leave their home or their neighborhood... like when she organized, alongside Bahía and Bidasoa, a support event for Mari, who was forced to close her butcher shop on Escudellers Street due to gentrification.

She was in love with the Gòtic and with Barcelona... and the Gòtic and Barcelona loved her back. She attracted every gaze as she walked through the neighborhood, with a natural elegance that made even strangers stop to ask for her permission to take a photo.

We will continue to enjoy her legacy now, harvesting the fruits of her experiences and learning from them so she will always live on within us. Because her strength reminds us that we can never abandon ourselves, nor those around us.

Because Tere hasn’t really left. She will remain in every street, every square, every fight. Tere’s body is gone, but her legacy lives on in all of us who were lucky enough to know her. The struggle will continue, just as you taught us.

Tere was 75 years old and had an immense heart. She was always willing to help those in need. Now, we have the opportunity to collectively take on the costs of her farewell and tribute.

We feel sad when we think you are gone, so we hold on to the joy you were. We will carry on your legacy—as a mother, as a woman, as a person, and as an activist!
We love you and will miss you. Fly high and free.

Main features and goals of the crowdfunding campaign

This project is a mutual aid initiative to honor the memory of Teresa Caja, an tireless activist from Barcelona’s Gòtic neighborhood. Through this campaign, we aim to follow her example and take care of one another by collectively assuming the costs of her farewell—just as she would have done for any of us.

Project Objectives

  • To collectively cover the costs of her farewell.
  • To recognize her contributions to the neighborhood and keep her legacy alive.
  • To mobilize the community in a gesture of shared support and remembrance.
  • To promote the spirit of cooperation and mutual aid in the neighborhood.

Why this is important

Teresa Caja dedicated her life to strengthening community bonds in the Gòtic neighborhood, defending the right of neighbors to live, share, and care for their surroundings. Her absence leaves an immense void, but also a valuable lesson: the importance of supporting one another.

This project arises from a collective desire to honor her in the way that best represents her legacy—by taking shared responsibility for her farewell, just as she would have done for any of us.

It is intended for everyone who knew her, for those who shared a struggle, a conversation, or simply the neighborhood she loved so dearly. It is also for those who believe in the importance of mutual support and solidarity—principles she so fiercely defended.

Team and experience

This project arises from a shared need: to continue Teresa Caja’s legacy. For years, she was a pillar for many neighbors in the Gòtic neighborhood, fighting for livable spaces, supporting those in need, and reminding us that a neighborhood is built on solidarity and mutual aid. Now, it is us—the people who shared our lives with her—who collectively take responsibility for her farewell.

Arcàdia de Can Batlló: A Living Legacy of Tere

Beyond being another part of Tere’s legacy, Arcàdia de Can Batlló is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing pedagogical renewal and social justice through education and training.

Its objectives include:

  • Promoting transformative educational projects.
  • Disseminating practices and experiences in the educational and social fields.
  • Designing and implementing training for teachers and community activists.
  • Developing educational resources that uphold the organization’s values and principles.
  • Providing guidance to families, professionals, and educators.
  • Researching successful experiences in education and emerging theories and trends.
  • Facilitating participatory and assembly-based decision-making processes.

L'Escola Arcàdia: A Self-Managed Cooperative School

The organization's primary project is L'Escola Arcàdia, a self-managed, cooperative, and community-run school in Can Batlló for children aged 0 to 16 years.

Launched in 2009 by a collective of teachers, the school currently operates in a provisional space as an early childhood center for children aged 0-6 years, located in one of the historic farmhouses within the Can Batlló complex.

Today, Arcàdia spans 400 square meters, where the youngest members of the community (0-6 years) learn and grow based on the principles of responsible freedom, equality, solidarity, mutual aid, and respect. Its educational approach integrates manual labor and intellectual growth equally, fostering a holistic, worker-oriented education.

A Commitment to Community and Activism

The organization maintains strong ties of inter-cooperation within the neighborhood, engaging in activism in education and care, supporting vulnerable groups, fighting evictions, and collaborating with other grassroots organizations.

Some of its key partners and allies include:

  • Can Batlló
  • Can Vies
  • L'Escoleta Popular de Sants
  • El Grup d’Habitatge de Sants
  • Sants TV
  • Universitat Lliure
  • Impuls Cooperatiu de Sants
  • Coop57
  • La Directa
  • La Comunal
  • Ateneu Llibertari del Poble Sec
  • Ateneu Enciclopèdic

In recent years, the organization has also contributed to local cooperative economic development through initiatives such as:

  • The Sants Farmers' Market (Mercat de Pagès de Sants)
  • The Social and Solidarity Economy Fair at Plaça Catalunya
  • Primavera Cooperativa
  • Winter and spring fairs at Can Batlló

Lastly, Arcàdia actively supports the rights of the most vulnerable communities—from assisting undocumented individuals in obtaining legal status, to fighting for housing rights, and participating in anti-eviction and child protection initiatives.

Teresa Caja’s spirit of resistance, solidarity, and care lives on in this project and in the many people and spaces she helped build.
