General information

I'm a Social Sciences teacher at a mountain secondary school in the heart of the Catalan Pyrenees. The project has been created with the help of a group of sixth-form students aged between 15 and 16 years old, and we want to take part in, develop and manage a solidarity project in Ghana thanks to my personal experience in solidarity projects.

These students are studying different sixth-form pathways (scientific, humanities and social sciences), but they all share the motivation and enthusiasm to develop a project of this magnitude.

Our objective is very clear: to raise funds to send 20 computers and set up a computer classroom in a school in Ghana, where there is a real lack of educational and technological resources. For us, access to technology is an everyday thing, but for many students in Ghana it can become an opportunity capable of changing their future.

Why are we doing this?

Because we believe that all people, wherever they live, deserve to have the same opportunities to learn and grow. In Ghana there are schools that do not have the basic equipment, and this greatly limits the pupils’ possibilities. We want to contribute our small grain of sand to reverse this situation.

You can see more sixth-form students in this video:

Why can you trust us?

Because we work as a team, with responsibilities shared out according to our abilities:

  • Some of us manage the budget and the accounts.
  • Others prepare the content for social networks and the dissemination of the project.
  • And we rely on the experience of our teacher, who has already previously collaborated with NGOs and knows first-hand the needs of these schools.

Where do we want to carry it out?

We want to carry out our project in a primary school with boys and girls aged between 6 and 12 in a small village in central Ghana, Kwahu Tafo. Kwahu Tafo (Ghana) is a community in the surroundings of Accra where the school is a key space for the children’s future. Despite the efforts of the teaching staff and the families, many schools have few technological resources and the computer classrooms often do not have sufficient or suitable equipment. For this reason, our campaign focuses on improving access to digital learning: we want to bring 20 computers so that the pupils can work on basic computing skills and, at the same time, refurbish a computer classroom so that it is a safe, functional and useful space for learning. With this action, we contribute to reducing the digital divide and to expanding educational opportunities for the whole school community.

You can see the village of Kwahu Tafo in this video:

During this time we have planned every step: we have created a work timetable, compared different computer models to choose the most suitable and durable ones, and we have started to publicise the project in order to reach as many people as possible.

Main features and goals of the crowdfunding campaign

Our project is based on a clear objective:

To guarantee access to digital education for pupils at a rural school in central Ghana through the creation of a technological classroom equipped with computers and suitable resources.

From this general objective, more specific ones can be described, such as:

  1. To raise awareness about the digital divide in Ghana.
  2. To raise funds to equip the school in Kwahu Tafo with computers and furniture.
  3. To offer educational opportunities and access to technology for the pupils.
  4. To facilitate the local teaching staff’s basic digital training so that they can use the resources with the pupils.
  5. To adapt and prepare a physical space to transform it into a technological classroom (electrical installation, tables, connection, etc.).

Another important characteristic is:

  • There is a collective return for the community, since the computers and the computer classroom will be supervised by teachers from the educational centre in Ghana, following prior training by the volunteers associated with the project. The pupils will also monitor the computers and the condition of the classroom by means of emails, photos and training for the pupils of the centre by the volunteers or the volunteer pupils who wish to visit the centre with the NGO.

  • The classroom and the computers will be for shared use by all the pupils of the centre, and the teachers will be responsible for ensuring their maintenance and the care of the facilities.

Why this is important

The project arose from the experience of teacher Quim Roy who, during a five-week period of voluntary work in Ghana, identified the lack of technological resources at the school in Kwahu Tafo. At present, the pupils study computing with a single book, without computers, which completely limits their practical learning, and in a classroom in poor condition.

Faced with this reality, the group aims to raise funds and acquire 20 laptops and 20 mice, as well as to prepare a computer classroom. To do this, work is being carried out jointly with the NGO WAVO, which supports communities in West Africa and will facilitate both the transport and the implementation of the equipment.

The project is being developed in several phases:
● Planning and fundraising, including a campaign on the GoFundMe crowdfunding platform.
● Purchase and preparation of the computer equipment, installing basic software and getting the devices ready.
● Preparation of the classroom, with furniture, lighting, ventilation and electrical safety.
● Shipping and implementation in Ghana, with WAVO’s logistical support.

The total budget is €3,700, which includes computers, mice, classroom improvements and shipping costs. The final objective is to offer the pupils technological tools that improve their learning and contribute to the development of the community.

Our project is aimed at all those people who want to cooperate in an international solidarity project developed by our teacher and with the help of the pupils of a rural mountain secondary school. We want to involve as many people as possible from the educational world, and therefore the whole educational community, from teachers, pupils and families to public institutions that see this solidarity project as an opportunity to reduce educational and technological inequalities in the world.

Team and experience

The experience of this project is based on the international solidarity volunteering carried out by our teacher in Ghana and in other parts of the world. During a stay of 5 weeks, he visited the rural school in Ghana and, in a meeting with the village community, he became aware of the difficulties the pupils have in accessing technology.

In this project we also have the support of the NGO WAVO, which has been working in this area for many years and gives us logistical support and human resources to carry it out.
