The existence of CineCiutat is an exceptional phenomenon that has inspired many cultural projects and associations around the world. We were born in the midst of the economic crisis thanks to the impulse of a large group of citizens who resisted losing a film reference and for the last eight years it has been managed by its own members through a participatory and horizontal model. A model that has led us to form part of the Innovation Group of Europa Cinemas (under the MEDIA programme of the European Union) and the Board of Directors of C.I.C.A.E. (International Confederation of Arthouse Cinemas).
Our activity is key to the development of local cinema. CineCiutat is the only cinema in Mallorca that regularly screens independent, auteur and original version films. We are also home to many film festivals and act as an unofficial cinematheque. The diverse and plural programming we offer, as well as educational workshops for schools and families, serve as support for local creators and as a meeting point for cinephile audiences. In short, we are an award-winning and recognized cultural project that has become an alternative to the commercial model of the film industry.
Moreover, our participatory nature has made us more than just a cinema. For 8 years we have been a centre that promotes conversation and environmental and social action in all areas. The latest example of this is our project Diàlegs amb ciutat: a series of participatory round tables that address what we can do at a local level, as a city and as citizens, for sustainable development in various areas, such as City and Gender, or City and Migratory Movements.
But our history is full of collaborations and actions with local and international entities (Amnesty International, Red Cross, Intermon-Oxfam, Medicos del Mundo, Association of friends of the Saharawi people, the energy cooperative Som Energia...). By joining the latter, we became the first cinema in Spain to operate exclusively with energy from renewable sources and, from there, we supported the creation of the Green Screens initiative to promote sustainable cinemas around the world.
We have always worked with special employment centres to integrate people with disabilities into our teams, whether through Nartha Serveis, or with the launch of CinemaRodat, a travelling cinema that takes the content of CineCiutat to the whole island in collaboration with Associació Gira-Sol (dedicated to the integration of people with mental health problems); a project that was awarded a prize by the IMAS (Mallorcan Institute of Social Affairs).
However, as an exhibitor, cultural centre and citizen's meeting point, we at CineCiutat are - at the same time - one of the most challenged agents in the industry. We are now facing important challenges derived from digitization and convergence and we urgently require a renovation that complies with legal requirements, that faces industrial demands and that improves the experience of our users.
This project will allow CineCiutat to invest in these aspects and avoid our closure.
In essence, this project seeks to meet two major objectives.
On the one hand, to carry out a necessary renovation of the facilities and technical resources that allow to fulfill the regulations in force. Some of the unexpected repairs are costly and it is urgent to resolve the situation soon. On the other hand, the project will serve to update the technical infrastructure and improve the user experience. The current configuration of the film industry forces cinemas to raise their quality standards to differentiate themselves from domestic alternatives and the reality of the CineCiutat project shows that to be more than a cinema, we need to restructure our spaces and improve our possibilities for organizing events, talks and conferences.
We are aware of the enormous difference between the minimum amount we ask for and the optimal/total amount, but it has an explanation. The minimum quantity will avoid immediate closure for legal reasons and, at best, would set the malfunction counter to zero, but it would not help us move forward. It would allow, for example, not to have to cancel screenings due to technical problems and that our projectionists don't have to go to work thinking What will break today?, but we would still have very limited technology and resources that overload our hired team and our volunteers. In addition, we would still not be able to properly do all that which differentiates us as a cinema and as a space.
However, from that minimum figure onwards - and especially if we reach around 60,000€ - we can already start talking about a change of inertia. A technological improvement that allows, for example, a better sound or even equipping the rooms with internet, audio and video connections for multifunctional uses that allow us to increase other income streams (lectures, videoconferences, videogames on the big screen and even concerts).
And if we surpass that figure, that's when we start dreaming! We have run the numbers and we know in detail what it would cost to do everything that our members have ever told us. The figure, however, is high: 430,000€. With that figure we would be making reality the innovation theories that we are asked about outside Mallorca (improving the user experience, the aesthetics of the accesses...) and also all those things that you tell us about -and that we know, believe us that we know-, like the air conditioning, the seats... We will be on our way to CineCiutat 2.0.
The motivation behind this crowdfunding is the same that has kept this unique project alive: public service, commitment to culture and constant support for local cinema.
It is aimed at all people who wish to support a cultural initiative based on a participatory model, anyone who wants to maintain the resistance of a type of cinema that is in extinction under the current commercial logic, but also to the entire community that makes up the local Mallorcan cinema and anyone who believes that culture can improve society and supports spaces for social and environmental action. From film lovers to young creators, including cultural managers, associations of all kinds, activists, researchers who want to make their findings known and families who are concerned about the education of their children.
CineCiutat is a non-profit cinema-association, self-managed by its members, so CineCiutat, above all, is people. People who in 2012, faced with the closure of the old Renoir cinemas in Palma, with the cry of Salvem els Renoir, achieved a feat unthinkable at the time, in the midst of the economic crisis and the audiovisual sector: reopening a cinema. Today, as an innovative project that is internationally recognised, we are trying to repeat the feat, not to save a few screening rooms, but rather #MoreThanACinema.
From the beginning, the participative nature of the project and the objective of being a multi-functional space and a meeting place for citizens has meant that many people and organizations have approached CineCiutat to support its development, contributing their specific knowledge or simply their passion. Of all these people, our 1,000 members stand out above all, and in these 8 years of adventure, more than 150 people have passed through CineCiutat as volunteers in the various circles of participation (programming, classic cinema, educational activities, communication...). Currently, we have about 20 volunteers who participate more or less weekly in various activities.
From the promoting group we can mention Pedro Barbadillo, honorary president of the association, audiovisual producer of documentaries for international televisions, and current director of the Mallorca Film Commission.
From the current Board of Directors:
Javier Pachón, in addition to being the president of the association, is the head of development. He was the project director from the beginning and currently combines his work in CineCiutat with that of strategic consultant and trainer for various international projects, such as the Innovation Laboratories of Europa Cinemas or the only international course for the training of independent film exhibitors, organized by the International Confederation of Arthouse Cinemas during the Venice Film Festival, both under the MEDIA program of the European Union.
Marco Robledo, as vice-president, in addition to being a film director and member of the ACIB, is a comic book writer, professor at the University of the Balearic Islands and creator of the D3D organizational model.
Ignacio Bergillos, secretary of the association, is a Doctor in Audiovisual Communication and Advertising, professor and academic coordinator of the Degree in Audiovisual Communication at CESAG and researcher, with special attention to audience participation in television, communication technology, audiovisual production and public service broadcasting in the digital age.
Marta Pérez, member of the association, has a degree in Advertising and Public Relations and has been a volunteer in the communication circle since 2013. She collaborates weekly with the programme "Al Dia", on IB3 Ràdio and "A vivir que son dos días Baleares" on Cadena SER. She is also co-creator of the cultural activity 'Literatura amb crispetes' of Rata Corner and responsible for content at Refineria Web, a company that works with brands such as Iberostar, Grupo Juaneda and Grupo Piñero. Marta is one of those people who believes that culture will save the world.
Rafa Goberna, also a member, is a people and strategy consultant for institutions and companies. Certified coach. He works in Spain and Latin America, accompanying management teams. Advisor to an NGO present in 26 countries. Professor at the MBA/MTA of the UIB. He believes that culture, and specifically the audiovisual world, is a powerful tool for the development of the critical spirit and social action.
Olga Titos has also been a member of the Board since 2019, but has been linked to CineCiutat since its origins. She was our film programmer until 2017 and then continued to be involved in the cause as a volunteer in the programming circle. She works in audiovisual production in Barcelona, Madrid and, for the last 14 years, in Mallorca. She is currently part of the Mallorca Vídeo team and works, among other productions, on the Balearic Government's communication campaigns and on the documentary Revelando a Mario.
CineCiutat, also has a hired team with more technical profiles, among which we find Cristina Cifre, graduate in pedagogy, has been responsible for the project's operations for 3 years, and for 5 years she has been responsible for educational activities.
Our participative character and multifunctional spirit, as well as our facet as meeting point for citizens, naturally led us to the elaboration of a transversal Mission-View-Values. This, added to the fact that we live in the most audiovisual society in history, means that everything can be explained and narrated through film and, in our case, within that “everything”, the Sustainable Development Goals have a special interest.
Although, as we say, our scope is transversal, we could highlight the following 3 SDGs:
Thus, an average of 600 students pass through our screening rooms every month and, every year, in collaboration with the University of the Balearic Islands, we run an official course for teachers on audiovisual content as an educational tool.
With all this, through projections, talks and the creation of didactic guides, we promote messages, debates and actions of social equality, gender, sexual freedom, sustainable development and citizen empowerment.
Currently, we are working with the council of Equality and IMAS to extend and expand our offerings to more centers, especially for people without resources.
From a more practical and daily point of view, it was agreed to create discounts and programs to facilitate access to people who are pensioners, unemployed and at risk of exclusion. One of these programmes, Charity Seat, allowed our users to buy tickets not for their personal use, but to be donated to entities that work with families without resources. Thus, CineCiutat, in the absence of being able to provide food or medicine, could contribute its screens and its programming, as we believe in the power of culture and leisure as part of the development of people and the elimination of inequalities.
Also the consumption of sustainable energy, both in our facilities and with CinemaRodat, which this year will have an electric van with solar panels that will feed the projection equipment, thus leaving a zero carbon footprint.
Finally, we also advocate for the protection of cultural and natural heritage, even with fundraising campaigns, as happened after the fire in La Trapa, in the Tramuntana mountain range.
