Unfortunately, hunger, food insecurity, malnutrition issues have been getting worse. Pandemic pushed out even more from our sustainable development goals. We stepped back from our improvement in the last 6 years. In 2020, at least 118 millions people are now on the hunger list, which means 811 millions hungry people on the planet. Two out ten Africans suffer from food insecurity - a double number than in each other area.
In Green Pedal, we’ve been supporting farming families in rural communities from Mozambique for the last 4 years. The one more vulnerable to hunger are the protagonists of the chance. Those few families who have the luck to eat something, they’re not the ones who can allow them to eat healthy or varied meals. Most of them just eat a mixture of water and corn each single day of the year, with no other option. And they eat once per day, luckily.
Our projects offer irrigation systems and agricultural associations to allow families to cultivate and sell vegetables, which means a complete chance. They achieve a varied diet to their relatives and the opportunity to get benefits thanks to the selling in local markets. We strongly believe that how to is an important step in the developing matter. In 2019, we supported a solar-powered irrigation system to the Nhaumue community and they got amazing results. Thanks to our projects, not only do they now have a job in the agricultural field, but also they got income from it. They keep improving their skills thanks to clean energy functions. They drove this initiative respecting the planet. They are able to eat every day having a better diet.
In Green Pedal, we want to point out that we tested that it works in different areas. We need your collaboration to install a solar-powered irrigation system in the next community: Massane. If we do it, 308 people won’t suffer hunger, 44 families will cultivate cereal and vegetables during the whole year.
We’re launching this crowdfunding because we truly believe that the more we are together in this project, the better world this will be for all of us.
70% of the people from Mozambique depend on the rain, which means survival agricultural practice.
They just eat corn. That's their daily basic meal. They cook “Shima”, a mixture of water and flour. The only meal that the rural families from Mozambique have every single day in the whole year.
The food isn’t enough for the whole year. As a consequence, they suffer from food insecurity, hunger, malnutrition and unhealthy diets.
It rains two or three months per year, if it rains. Rivers are the only water source alternative, but most of the people don’t have access to irrigation systems.
People don’t have income. 90 % of the population in these communities depends on agriculture.
Women don't have options. They’re uneducated, they’re the only support in their homes and they’re the only ones who work helping in the fields.
Climate disasters are strongly present: Ciclones, droughts, and floods make even harder lives for these people.
The main goal in this campaign is to help 44 farming families (308 people) who are part of Massane Agricultural Association.
Since we have founded this organization, Massane is one of the rural communities who we work with. For some years ago, this community was what we named the Massane Agricultural Association. 25 women and 19 men are part of it. Our main achievement is to guarantee them a varied and rich diet and incomes thanks to sustainable agriculture.
One of the greatest weaknesses that is present in this Association is the access to water. They don’t have water irrigation to cultivate during the whole year.
Thanks to the collaboration that we get from this campaign, we’ll install a solar-powered irrigation system which allows them to take advantage of the Buzi river. Farming families won't wait for rainy seasons any more. They'll be able to cultivate cereal vegetables during the whole year.
We built a successful model, which already exists in other areas. In 2019, we installed a solar-powered irrigation system in Nhaumue Agricultural Association. We helped 30 families (210 people). Today we also want to help families from the Massane community.
Reducing the risk of food insecurity and instability on the agricultural production for farming families.
Cultivating during 365 days. Thanks to the solar-powered irrigation system, farming families will increase 50% of their annual production, meaning an improvement to the vegetable rotation through that year. So far, they’re able to cultivate for 3 or 4 months per year as a consequence of no access to water.
Improving population diet, focusing on the good quality of food. They'll be able to cultivate different kinds of vegetables and get a varied diet. So far, unknown for most of the beneficiaries.
Getting income. The total vegetable production won’t be just for consumption. a great part of it will be sold on the nearest local markets. For the very first time, farming families will get incomes. 30% of the production will be for consumption and 70% will be sold.
Offering better options for women. 57% of the Massane Agricultural Association are women. Being part of this Association means having a job position for each of them.
Respecting the ecosystem. They use a solar-powered irrigation system, no more fossil energy. Awaring people about how essential it is to conserve and protect the ecosystem for our present and future.
Encouraging sustainable agricultural practice. Our technicians will support families teaching them about conservative/regenerative agriculture in the agricultural campaigns. They'll supervise them and give them technical assistance in the field.
Promoting innovative and efficient agriculture among young people. They’ll get job positions and incomes to help their families.
We’re motivated by independent families: they’re able to decide what to cultivate.
We’re motivated to reach a healthy diet daily.
We’re motivated to give families the opportunity to educate their children.
We’re motivated by independent women.
We’re motivated to give a brighter future to young people.
We’re even more inspired by having the conviction that we can make it ethically, respecting communities and future generations. For the last decades, development meant contaminated waters, burnt forests, dry soil as a consequence of the greenhouse effect. We don't want that anymore.
We’re motivated by people like you.

This project will help 44 farming families. A total of 308 people who are part of Massane Association. They are:
25 women's head of the family (175 people)
19 men’s head of the family (133 people)
These families live in rural areas far away from Chibabava district. (Mozambique). Areas without basic services. Areas where food insecurity and desnutrition are an everyday occurrence.
The district doesn't have electricity, or access to water. Women are in charge of looking for water (they’re helped by their children, who also have to walk very long distances - sometimes, meaning 20km. They’re also responsible of dekernel and mill the corn, take care of their children and their homes. on the other hand, men are in charge of looking for a job outdoor. Nevertheless, the environment doesn’t give them any job opportunities. This situation forces them to emigrate to the capital of Maputo, or to any other country in sudafrica. As a consequence, mothers become head of the family.
Families might have seven children at home. Many of those children are forced to give up studies, because some girls have their own children at a very young age, others have to support their families. As a consequence, 90% of mothers are illiterate and 50% of fathers are illiterate.
Since 2017, we work for rural communities in Mozambique. Our main goal is to support them in the development of sustainable and local food systems. There are three approaches: social, economic and environmental. Our projects are focus on farming families, clean energies, sustainable farming activities and vulnerable children.
Green Pedal has 9 employees and 15 volunteers. 7 people work on the fields: Elisa, Sete, Luis, Felipe, Filimone, José and Samuel. Hugo, Laura and volunteers are in Spain.
ESMABAMA Association helps us to develop and install projects in the fields.
In 2013, a small seed was planted when Hugo went to Mozambique with another association. After 3 years, that project was done, and they had to come back to Spain. That was just the beginning. they knew that a lot of work had to be done. any chance needs help, constancy and support for a very long time. We know that investment and hard work are also needed to keep building these projects. Green Pedal was built for those people: Once we met them, we weren’t able to leave them behind.

This project will be done thanks to the collaboration from this crowdfunding campaign that is aligned with some of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“SDG 1: No Poverty.” Thanks to solar-powered irrigation system installation, families will be able to get varied vegetables and benefits from the selling of the produce.
“SDG 2: Zero Hunger.” Solar-powered irrigation system installation will improve agricultural production throughout the entire year.
“SDG 5: Gender Equality.” Women have job opportunities. 57% of the solar-powered irrigation system beneficiaries are women.
“SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth.” Thanks to the solar-powered irrigation system project, Massane Agricultural Association will get incomes for all the members.
“SDG 10: Reducing Inequality.” We’ll help to reduce hunger. By 2030, 840 millions people might be in that horrible situation. We mainly support women.
“SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production.” Solar-powered irrigation system means usage of clean energies and sustainable agricultural production.
